Matilda was up at six a.m., even though she didn’t need to be at the school for the coach to pick them up at eight-thirty. Another time Evie would have whined about getting up so early on a weekend, but this time she was excited. Just not for the same reason. Matilda thought her mom was going away for a couple of days to read books, drink wine, and walk on a beach. Evie hoped she made it to the beach, but wouldn’t complain if she and Luke were holed up in a cabin for the entire two days.
Evie walked into Matilda’s bedroom to find the bag she had packed so meticulously last night had been opened and all the contents spilled out on the bed. Well, that had been a waste of time. Matilda walked back in from the bathroom brushing her teeth.
“I had all this packed, what are you doing?’ Evie growled.
“I couldn’t find the marshmallows. Jess and I are going to have them around the campfire. I promised her I’d take some.”
“They’re on the counter downstairs where you left them last night. Now, give me the list, and I’ll make sure everything’s still here.”
Ten minutes later, the bag was sorted and Matilda dressed. Evie went downstairs and made some coffee and breakfast. The bag was on the couch and Matilda went over to add the marshmallows and started taking things out again.
“Don’t you dare? Put that stuff back.” Matilda couldn’t remember Ben, but Evie thought back to how her late husband would pack and unpack the car ten times if they were going away. There had to be something in this nature not nurture belief. Finally, the car was packed and they were on their way. Matilda kept wriggling in her seat. It was wonderful to be so young and truly excited about something. Evie was excited too about the weekend and realized how jaded she had become. Hopefully, her internal batteries would be recharged, and she wouldn’t need to buy any batteries for her vibrator for a while.
Matilda ran over to her friends as soon as they arrived at the school. Somehow, Evie didn’t think her daughter would miss her mom too much, and that was the way it should be. She remembered when she had gone off as a kid and not looked back. It had been so much fun sleeping away with friends and telling scary stories around the campfire. There were other times she remembered, like when she wandered off with friends following a deer and almost gotten lost. It was amazing the same camp still existed all these years later. She hoped the plumbing was better. The school showed her pictures and it looked as if the renovations were extensive. Maybe kids these days didn’t rough it as much as she had.
Matilda ran over and gave her a hug as the bus was boarding. “You’re not going to cry, are you, Mom?” Matilda laughed.
“No. Now, go have fun.” Her little girl was growing up.
